Fish Oil – Depression

Fish oil-depression: Research is published weekly that suggests fish oil can fight depression. In fact, a healthy brain is a brain that is properly nourished. Fish oil is a supplement that provides a key brain-building fat: Omega 3.

Fish Oil-Depression: Does it Really Help?

Each of us need the proper intake of vitamins, minerals, and fats for optimal brain health. However, the typical western diet is extremely low in the beneficial fat in fish oil Omega 3. Our brains need the Omega 3 in fish oil to be healthy and most of us do not get enough of it.

In the book Rebuild from Depression: A Nutrient Guide, the authors review the scientific evidence on the fish oil – depression link, as well as the link between depression and deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. Authors Amanda Rose, Ph.D., and Annell Adams M.D. identify food nutrients that are critical in fighting depression. From those nutrients, they examine the massive food database maintained by the USDA and found fifty “depression buster foods” – the food for depression with the highest content of depression-fighting nutrients.

The analysis in Rebuild from Depression is the first analysis of food and depression of its kind. There are many “lists” out there, some lists of foods that fight depression, but this is the first list based on a systematic analysis of over 5,000 foods.

As an example, here is a list of the top 10 foods commonly available at any grocery store (there are many others on the list, some of which are obscure):fish oil-depression

  • Clam
  • Oyster
  • Flax
  • Herring
  • Trout
  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Sardines
  • Crab
  • Walnuts
  • Salmon

But a food list is not all you need.

A key question for you is this: What vitamins and minerals are you deficient in?

A deficiency in fish oil –> depression?

There are body signs of nutrient deficiencies. For instance, your muscle cramps might be caused by a magnesium deficiency or your stretch marks by a zinc deficiency. If you have not had enough fish oil in your diet, you may have dried skin and chapped lips. If you have had limited seafood in your diet and you have had a diet high in vegetable oils, you are very likely deficient in the beneficial fat in fish oil. Depression may be the result.

In addition to body signs of nutrient deficiencies, there are clinical tests your doctor can perform to check your nutrient levels. The Rebuild book includes an extensive appendix to assist you.

Fish oil-depression: How much should you take?

We hear in the news regularly that we should take fish oil for depression, but the devil’s in the details. How much should you take? How do you read a fish oil label?

It turns out that you should take quite a bit of fish oil for depression, upwards of four grams of the specific Omega 3 called “EPA.” Many fish oil supplements contain very little EPA and will not give you sufficient quantities of EPA. Watch the video below for insight on fish oil dosages fo depression. Rebuild from Depression author Amanda Rose describes how much to take and how to read the label on a bottle.
